Big Time Dust Control Solution at the Asarco Smoke Stack Implosion
April 30, 2013

The smoke stack implosion at Asarco in El Paso, Texas brought with it many concerns as well as mixed emotions as the locals remembered what Asarco had meant to their community. The stacks at Asarco dotted the El Paso landscape for more than 50 years, and the copper smelting plant was one of the major employers in the area. The plant closed in 2009 and left an environmental nightmare for the city of El Paso. When the decision came to demolish the plant, the Asarco Stacks were destined to go down in history as the largest stacks ever to be demolished in the United States, and the dust containment process at the implosion site was one of the most complicated and intensive jobs ever undertaken. One of the major concerns for the Asarco Trust when they decided to implode the towers was the environmental issue of the fugitive dust after the implosion. Their need for dust containment led them to contact Company Wrench.
Company Wrench is the leader in dust containment solutions. With an extensive inventory of quality dust control equipment, Company Wrench was the clear choice for such a large scale implosion. They were also the only dust control company that had on site engineers and a thorough knowledge of the demolition industry.
Set-up and installation of Company Wrench’s dust control solution took 5 days and 270 man hours. Company Wrench utilized a 400,000 gallon water tank on site to supply one of the 3 systems designed to control the dust, and an additional eight 20,000 gallon water tanks in order to supply the 2,200 gpm needed to run the dust suppression units at a second location on the site. In addition to the tanks, Company Wrench used a mixture of their own fleet of equipment utilizing the CW Dust Destroyer and the DF Dust Fighter, 4100 linear feet of pipe and three 6-inch diesel pumps in order to supply each of the 26 dust units with the water they needed to control the dust as the stacks came down.
CW Machine Worx is the manufacturing division of Company Wrench. Its designed, engineered and manufactured diesel powered Dust Destroyer was the work horse on the implosion site. Along with the Dust Destroyer, Company Wrench used a smaller dust control device from its dust suppression line called the Dust Fighter. Knowing that the usual 15 gpm capacity of the Dust Fighter would not be enough to handle the dust generated by the implosion, the CW Machineworx engineering team replaced the Dust Fighter’s smaller nozzles with the nozzles from the dust hungry Dust Destroyer. This simple piece of engineering took the Dust Fighter’s 15 gpm to 85 gpm, an almost 600% increase in the water flow.
The Asarco Implosion success story is not unique to Company Wrench’s 13 year history. Jobs like this one are what set Company Wrench apart from every other dealer, manufacturer and rental company in the dust suppression industry today. Providing turnkey solutions for jobs ranging in every size and scope has made Company Wrench the cutting edge provider of dust control solutions. The successful completion of the Asarco job is a testament to the teamwork, dedication and preparation of the Company Wrench team. Put that team to work for you today, and make your next demolition or implosion project a Company Wrench success story.
