Custom Solutions: Magnet Controllers and Generator Systems
June 3, 2015

Smith Iron and Metal of Richmond, Virginia has been recycling scrap metals since 1940. In 2007, they expanded their production by adding a shredder facility that allowed them to increase the material they process each year. They have 7 standard oriented Terex Fuchs material handlers with solid-state generator systems to feed their shredder machines. Their whole recycling operation revolves around the Terex Fuchs brand because of its quality, performance, and reliability, but they were more comfortable with maintaining the constant voltage, brush-style duty cycle generator controllers than the solid-state variety. As the constant voltage system wasn’t an option offered from the factory, they decided to reach out to their Terex Fuchs Dealer, Company Wrench, to see if they could retrofit their material handler with the system that their staff felt more knowledgeable about.
Tom contacted Keith Dodds, Company Wrench’s Service Department Manager and explained his situation. Keith put together a few options for the style generator system that met Tom’s requirements. In the end, Tom decided to go with an Ohio Magnet RD1W Automatic drop magnet controller and generator.
Company Wrench’s Service Department went to work engineering the system to work with the new material handler. The machine was delivered to the customer within two weeks and was able to save Smith Iron and Metal considerable expense. Maintenance personnel were able to work on the system without heavy training and were able to repair worn parts instead of replacing parts upon failure.
After helping the customer and realizing the benefits to offering a constant voltage magnet controlled generator system, Company Wrench reached out to Terex Fuchs to share their customer’s story and the solution they came up with. Terex Fuchs saw the importance and welcomed the customer’s feedback. Fuchs began working with Keith Dodds’ Service Department to implement the system in their material handlers and plan to offer it as an option from the factory.
.Company Wrench prides itself in offering their customers solutions that save time, money, and resources. “Once we help the customer find the right equipment for their application, we make sure we offer training and information to allow the customer the ability to use and maintain their equipment properly”, said Dodds.
“We offer customization services for pretty much anything you can think of; not only do we have solutions for Magnet & Generator Systems, but we can provide customizations for Attachments, Custom Fronts, Cab Guards, and Elevated Cabs”, Dodds said. “We even went as far as hybridizing a Terex Fuchs MHL360 carrier to accept and operate a rotating shear in 2011.”
